Writer: JulesJules

Updated: Jan 4

A few months ago in Nashville Tennessee at an Armored MMA event, John Stegmeier and Andrew Mccabe faced-off with two-handed axes in a chainlink octagon. The resulting fight's footage and commentary received over 1.5 million views and was posted all over social media. You can see the fight for yourself below.

Since then, there has been an increased interest in the sport of Buhurt and Armored MMA, and people are looking to learn more about this unique hobby and the teams and fighters in the community. This blog will serve that purpose and aims to showcase the teams, fighters, and various events around the country. If you're new to the sport, then let this blog serve as your introduction to the world of Buhurt (Also known by various other names, but we'll get to that later). If you're already familiar with Buhurt, we hope you will find the articles and stories we post here engaging and beneficial to the sport, just as we intend them to be.

Our first spotlight is on the highly anticipated Carolina Carnage Fest, easily among the largest Buhurt events in the Western Hemisphere. Set to take place from January 31st to February 2nd, this event promises three days of near-constant fighting, with over 30 teams and hundreds of individual fighters registered, it's an event that no fan of the sport should miss, and links for tickets can be found at the end of this article.

Carolina Carnage is a yearly event run by the Palmetto Knights, and this will be its 8th year running. Last year, teams from Canada, England, and even Australia came to the T. Ed Garrison Arena in Pendleton South Carolina to join the best of the American teams in the field of battle for glory and gold. Fighters participated in matched weapon duels, open weapon MMA fights, and both 5v5 and 12v12 mass battles. It was a multi-day event that was featured in a video documentary by Sensei Seth

Armored MMA is separated by weight class, but because of the large number of teams and fighters that attend this event, the Men's 5v5s tournament is split into two separate tiers. Tier 1, or Gold Tier, consists of the top-ranked teams from the Buhurt International (BI) Ranking System. Tier 2, or Silver Tier, is made up the teams that are either not ranked on the system or are not ranked high enough to make the cut. The ranking system for this league is determined by an individual team's performance in the previous Buhurt Season.

That's right, the sport consisting of individuals fighting each other in medieval armor has a season. It runs from January 15th to December 15th each year, and its not a coincidence that Carolina Carnage Fest falls near the start of the season. You can think of Carolina Carnage Fest as the Medieval Combat USA Season Opener.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be showcasing every single one of the teams attending Carolina Carnage Fest this year. We'll start with the Silver Tier by each region, showcase the nine (9) femme teams attending this year, and end with the Gold Tier teams. We'll be taking a look at the dueling and MMA matchups as they get announced and taking a look at some of the most well-known fighters there. We'll keep you up to date on the upcoming matchups as they get announced, and highlight some fights and rematches to keep an eye on.
